Use­ful Ubuntu com­mands

unpack .tar to spe­cif­ic 

Using gun­zip com­mand:
$ gunzip file.gz
$ ls file

Using gzip ‑d com­mand:
$ gzip -d file.gz
$ ls file

If file exten­sion is tar.gz, type the com­mand:
$ tar -zxvf file.tar.gz

Check memory usage

watch -n 5 free -m
OR free -m

Hard Drive Usage
df -h

Update the package index
apt-get update

remove a package
apt-get remove [x]


install package
apt-get install [x]

Upgrade packages
apt-get upgrade

Create new user

add­user exampleuser

Delete a folder

sudo rm -r -f /path/

Change password
passwd username


Reboot
reboot now

Send mail

echo "This is the body of the email" | mail -s "This is the subject line" root

Change directory name
mv <Old_directory_Name> <New_Directory_Name>
